January sucks the most. You have completed the seasonal festivities that were expected of you, and now all you're left with is a bloated face that still smells like sherry, a bank account that has seen better days, and the limp realisation that winter is not over yet, that there's still February, and now all you must do is wait, like a slow and patient turtle.
That said, Laura Marling just released a new song from her upcoming album Semper Femina, so it's not all bad. It's called "Wild Fire", and it sounds as if it was purpose built for this wintry waiting period, for walking around in the snowy city slush, for staring out the train window at the low, grey English sky. Like all Laura Marling songs, she tells a story, and you'll get completely stuck in it.
"She keeps a pen behind her ear in case she's got something that really, really needs to say," she sings over the slow and rich folk melody. "She puts it in a notepad, she's going to write a book someday. Of course the only part that I want to read is about her time spent with me, wouldn't you desire to know how you're seen? Are you getting away with who you're trying to be?"
