Girls Dreams

Maggie Rogers, the Maryland-born, New York-based singer-songwriter-producer who left Pharell Williams speechless at an NYU masterclass last year, just released her debut EP, Now That The Light Is Fading. It's a rich and rewarding 20 minutes, not least because Rogers still seems quietly uncertain of her trajectory. She's a gifted producer, a smart songwriter, still getting to grips with a voice that meanders between a wispy falsetto and a soulful mid-range. And she's 22 years old. So, right now, she's making pretty, though nicely askew, pop music. What she does with that in the next few years, even she doesn't seem to know. That's going to be fun to follow.

Last night Rogers made her TV debut as the musical guest on Smiley Happy Bouncy Giggle Time with Jimmy Fallon, performing "Alaska," the track that garnered her attention in the first place last year. Again, Rogers seems to be trying things out: she dances fitfully, allows her voice to wander occasionally, but never gives up the middle ground of the song, holding everything together.
