Girls Dreams

When you think about it, a collaboration between Grimes and Janelle Monae feels like very natural. Though they work in slightly different genres (Janelle in android funk-by-way-of-R&B, and Grimes in manic pixie dance pop), both are constantly pushing boundaries, looking towards the future, and, perhaps most importantly, representing heavy for women's creativity in music.

So the news that they've taken their duet "Venusfly" from Grimes' 2015 album Art Angels and turned it into what looks like a mind-bending visual which will stream exclusively via TIDAL tomorrow (February 3) is, though maybe not surprising, definitely very exciting.

The Grimes-directed clip, which you can preview below, seems typically innovative, with intricate costuming, some vaguely warrior princess/badass musician characterisation and Grimes herself looking like she's being reborn in a vat of tar. Obviously.

Of the collaboration she wrote: "sometimes it feels futile to be making art in this cruel and extreme political climate, but some of the brightest moments of the last few months for me and for a lot of you, i suspect, have come from seeing @janellemonae's amazing and positive vision of the future, especially when we are being introduced to so many possible dystopian futures."
