Girls Dreams

Future's self-titled fifth studio album is out right now, and Zane Lowe has released the full video of his interview with the Atlanta rapper, first aired on Beats 1 this afternoon. Shot at Walter's Clothing, an Atlanta landmark, it has Future detailing the process behind his new album, the difficulties in bouncing back from his breakup with Ciara, and his desire to reconnect with his fans in 2017. Future, which has no features, is a move towards independence: "I'm at the point in my life right now, in my career career," he says, "where I'm just focused on creatively coming out with something special on my own."

The most illuminating segment, however, is a back and forth between Lowe and Future on the troubles of social media:

Lowe: We got a hint that you were in a private headspace, creative headspace, that you were taking a break from all that public-facing stuff, because all the socials went away, everything got shut down. The connection went dark. Is that around the time you started to put the pieces together for this album?

Future: Yeah, everything just started to come together, even when I started to shut down social media, because I wanted to find time to think about something else. And just finding time to think about posting pictures and posting captions, what I'm going to write for the captions, what I'm doing for this…

Lowe: How did it feel when you disconnected from all that? Did you love it? What was it like being away from maintaining all that chaos?

Future: That was probably the best thing I've ever done. Because I don't have to respond to certain things that's going on even in my life. People just[…] Whatever they're writing about, I don't have to address it, I don't have to be able to speak on it, because they know my social media's just shut down. So anything that's going on in that period of time, probably just gets washed away. Because I'm not giving it the attention that I want to give… I want to give the music that attention, being in the studio. I want to give all of my attention to my music, my kids, my family.
