Girls Dreams

North London grime hero Stormzy was the guest on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge this morning, meaning that he had to perform a cover of a popular song that could one day go onto a CD that you can buy for £12.99 next to the checkout at Tesco's because, I don't know, maybe you're really shitty at buying presents for your family, or maybe you're just a masochist. A Live Lounge set always carries the threat of imminent, cringe-inducing disaster. But holy shit, Stormzy's cover of "Ultralight Beam." Holy shit.

Host Clara Amfo introduces the track by asking Stormzy if the cover is a nod to that performance at the Brits in 2015, in which Kanye brought most of the London grime scene onstage with him for a performance of "All Day." Basically, no:

"This song means a lot to me. Love the message of the song, I love the musicality of the song. It's one of my favorite songs, both from how I feel about it and from an artist's point of view. I appreciate everything about the song: the lyrics the melodies, the way it was composed together. It's a song that inspires me."

From there, he just loses it. Listen to the full track here. "Ultralight Beam" starts at the 2:14 mark.
