Girls Dreams

Gentlewoman, Ruby Man, the collaborative covers album from well-dressed wizard Matthew E White and London folk enchantress Flo Morrissey, comes out later this week. The tracklist is diverse, checking off Frank Ocean, Leonard Cohen, James Blake, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, all backed by a steady, insistent groove. If it reaches the heights of Morrissey's debut Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful or White's criminally underappreciated 2015 LP Fresh Blood, it'll be a resounding success.

The fourth track we've heard from the record is a cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sunday Morning," a bold move on a covers record, but one that the duo manage to pull into their own odd realm with minimal effort. Morrissey plays it straight, taking on lead vocal duties and occasionally dragging a line out, delaying herself. White bends strings in the background, falling in with the maracas, building his own rhythms.
