Trent Reznor hinted that Nine Inch Nails' upcoming EP Not the Actual Events would be more experimental than his usual mode, and with new single "Burning Bright," he's made good on that promise and then some. It's a deliberately atonal, not-at-all-catchy slab of doom-y metal. A refrain of "break through the surface and breathe" appropriately counterbalances the monstrously detuned guitars and Reznor's wallowing, ranting verses.
You can't dance to this but it represents a significant departure for Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross, who've mainly focused on quiet menace on their soundtrack work and not full-throttle aggression. Listen to "Burning Bright (Field on Fire)" below.
Phil trusts in guitars tuned lower than D. He's on Twitter.
