Girls Dreams

On Friday November 18, Adam Yauch Park in Brooklyn Heights, a park dedicated to the memory of the late Beastie Boy also known as MCA, was vandalised with swastikas and the words "GO TRUMP."

In response, local politicians planned an "anti-hate rally" at the park. According to a press release posted on the Beastie Boys' Twitter page and copied below, it was organised by a number of local politicians including State Senator Daniel Squadron, Congresswoman Nydia Velásquez, as well as "city council members, elected officials, and community and faith leaders." Squadron said in a tweet that fellow Beastie Boy Ad-Rock would be in attendance. Details of the rally can be found below.

Yauch, like bandmates Ad-Rock and Mike D, was Jewish.

Hate crimes have spiked across the US in the wake of Donald Trump's election last week, and minority groups New York City have not been exempt from the targeting. Through a megaphone, Ad-Rock gave a speech that began, "I'm assuming that we're all here today because we're thinking the same thing – spray painting swastikas at a children's playground is a messed up thing to do."

"This is more about someone in New York City linking nazi Germany to Donald Trump a 'hell yeah' kind of way', in a park where children play," he continued, before encouraging anybody who is able to donate money to Black Lives Matter, Planned Parenthood and Flint, volunteer, and make their voices heard.
