"I’m just doing the same as I’ve always been doing… I don’t miss The Streets because I’m still doing the same shit, but I don’t have to sing the old songs." That's what former The Streets man Mike Skinner told Noisey in an interview last year. The "same shit" Skinner is referring to is Tonga, the touring club night he started last year with legendary Manchester collective Murkage.
The brainchild of Skinner and Murkage Dave, the rap/heavy bass/grime club night has quickly developed into a fully-formed project: Tonga Balloon Gang. Originally a series of parties running out of Dalston's Victoria, the group have gone from strength to strength over the past year, with regular nights at Fabric, a monthly Spotify show and a quarterly residence in Berlin.
Today, we're premiering their new video for ‘CCTV’, a grime tinged banger featuring turns from Cognac-wielding Brum MCs Jaykae and Mayhem NODB. Directed by Skinner himself, it also features Murkage Dave dicking around in supermarkets and some pretty sweet masks designed by Skepta/Virgil Abloh favourite Ryan Hawaii.
