With California turntable legend DJ Shadow staring down the twentieth anniversary of his landmark 1996 album Endtroducing....., he seems eager to leave his trademark sample-based methodology in the rear view mirror. It was evident he was getting restless on 2000s releases The Outsider and The Less You Know, the Better, but a just-released new song drives the point home in earnest. "The Mountain Will Fall" is the title track from Shadow's forthcoming fifth proper studio album, and in place of breakbeat wizardry, we get soothing, shimmering synths over woozily behind time drums.
"Endtroducing..... in 2016 would not sound like Endtroducing..... in 96 by design," Shadow told Pitchfork. "The same way I was trying to push the boundaries then, I'm trying to push my own boundaries now." The Mountain Will Fall is out June 24 on Mass Appeal and features Run the Jewels, trumpeteer Matthew Halsall, producer Nils Frahm, and more. Stream the title track below.
