Girls Dreams

Last night, Kesha was awarded the Human Rights Campaign's Visibility Award at the Nashville Equality Dinner. The award is given to high profile individuals who use their platform to advance and advocate for the LGBT movement, with LA singer Wrabel introducing Kesha as "truly a beacon of light, and of love, and of strength, and of courage for all of us in and out of the LGBT community".

Looking at the current cultural climate of celebrities, few musicians in such a visible position have gone through as much as Kesha. She was recently denied a preliminary injunction to get out of her recording contract with Sony, Dr. Luke and his label Kemosabe, despite her allegations of abuse against former producer Luke. With all this still ongoing, Kesha gave a beautiful speech after receiving the award, beginning by speaking positively and encouragingly about her platform.

"Fame is strange and unnatural and I'm grateful for it mainly because it has put me in a position where I can actually do something positive for the world, and that is really the best part of it," she said. "I love writing songs and I love making music, but this is the most rewarding part of it."

Addressing the legal battle, Kesha told the audience, "For any of you who know, I'm going through some personal things that have been really intense and hard lately, and I just want to say thank you for any support I've recieved."

She then went on to speak about her early childhood in Nashville where she felt like a "misfit" who "gravitated toward other social outsiders, many of them in the LGBT community."

"We just knew that we were bullied for being ourselves, shamed for being different, and encouraged to hide the things that made us unique," Kesha said. "My message today is don't be afraid to speak up against any injustice you experience. Don't let people scare or shame you into changing the things about you that make you unique."

You can watch the whole thing below, with Kesha's speech starting around 9:20.
