Girls Dreams

When Frank Ocean uploaded an image to his Tumblr last April, teasing what seemed like an album release, time froze. "I got two versions. I got twoooo versions #ISSUE1 #ALBUM3 #JULY2015 #BOYSDONTCRY", he wrote, hinting that the follow-up to his Grammy winning debut album Channel Orange would be released that Summer. As the story goes though, leaves grew on trees, ice lollies melted to the floor, hearts were broken and memories forged, yet summer passed without another word from Ocean.

He cancelled his only festival appearance of the year, didn't release the album, had some sort of weird tour with James Blake which ended in neither of them playing a live London show, and pop entered a state of emergency. Without any solid information to go from, hype for Ocean's upcoming album reached the sort of hysterical fever pitch where grown men and women were publically exhilarated over small changes in the code to Ocean's official website. In some ways, the lack of information on Ocean's album proved even more fruitful for those who capitalised on the musician's thirsty and parched fan-base. It was a wild time.

Where was Frank? Frank? Fronk?! Some thought he'd quit music forever. Others were confident he would always return. A couple of snippets of new Frank Ocean music surfaced at the latter end of 2015, most noteably from the Snapchat account of Odd Future member Hodgy Beats. It was also hinted late last year that a new Frank Ocean single would be released called "White Ferrari". Yet the single was never released, reported video shoots for a different single called "Nikes" were also said to have been canned, and 2015 ended without any word on new music from Frank Ocean. Which brings us up to today, March 1, 2016, or if you've been counting, July 244, 2015.

Frank Ocean reportedly held a "very very secret" listening party on Sunday night, where he played new music. Nearly all of the snippets posted online have since been removed, suggesting they were legitimate snippets and have been subject to takedowns from Ocean's label, Def Jam. However one snippet still exists, it's three minutes long, and you can listen below. One word of warning before new music from Frank Ocean hits your ears, though: it's a low-bitrate recording of a song that's been re-recorded using an iPhone. If you're someone who savours that first time listen, press play at your peril.
