The Philadelphian group NOTHING released one of Noisey's favourite records of 2014. It's called Guilty of Everything and, deep within its heavy dream-pop, there's a sense that all your worries are being washed down the plug hole; swirling around and slinking off into the sewer of the past as the record reaches its climatic end. It's loud, but comforting too. It's almost as if the driving shoegaze sound the group have become known for has the power to "shake it off", as Taylor Swift would say.
In the two years since the release of Guilty of Everything, NOTHING have been busy. The follow-up record, called Tired of Tomorrow, was scheduled for release via Collect Records. Then (in a story the band will no doubt come to tire of hearing over the next few months) some fuckhole called Martin Shkreli shape-shifted in from another dimension to raise the price of AIDS medication. As we reported back in September, Shkreli was involved in the funding for NOTHING's label, Collect Records, and as a result of the controversy surrounding Shkreli, Collect's roster subsequently disolved. So, steaming ahead regardless, NOTHING set themselves up with a new label partner, Relapse Records. They release Tired of Tomorrow this May.
Today we're premiering the first video from Tired of Tomorrow, which is called "Vertigo Flowers". "The song is very much about dealing with spells of paranoia", Domenic Palermo, frontman for NOTHING, told us over email. In order to capture that feeling, the video was shot in a small room, packed with high pressure fire extinguishers which were filled with paint and water and aimed at the band members, who also couldn't see what was happening due to blinding flood light being shone directly into their eyes.
"Everyone in the band was told the paint would burn their eyes, taste bad in their mouth, and be very cold", Palermo continued. "[The video was going to be one single shot], bringing even more pressure as we had no way to have a real rehearsal. I wanted to create a blank canvas and let the unpredictability and anxiety that comes with the anticipation of something awful tell the story, all the while showcasing the brilliance and beauty that can follow and be left, directly behind."
