Pioneering singer-songwriter and producer David Bowie has died following an 18-month battle with cancer. He was 69 years old. 

Rumours circulated on the internet in the very early hours of Monday January 11th, and were confirmed just before 7am on Twitter by Bowie's son, Duncan Jones.

The devastating news of his death has come only two days after the artist celebrated his 69th birthday, marking the occasion with the release of his staggering 29th album, Blackstar, which had been received with widespread praise by fans and critics alike.

Bowie was born in the South London district of Brixton in 1947, but since the release of his adventurous second studio album, Space Oddity, his effect and influence on music as an artform has been global. He was a singer, a songwriter, a painter, an actor, a multi-instrumentalist and a record producer. Suitably, the outpouring of emotion and respect from those who worked with the artist, or were simply besotted with his music, has already been overwhelming, indicative of the universal love there has always been for Bowie.

The official statement from his publicist has since been posted on his official Facebook page, and reads: "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

*UPDATE*

Long time David Bowie producer and close friend Tony Visconti has paid tribute on Facebook this morning. He writes: "He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life - a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry."
