Get ready to suck it up, elitists, because before the corporate pop lizard we have come to know as Katy Perry came to exist, there was "Katy Hudson" - a contemporary Christian artist who, somewhere between 2003 and 2005, dated Relient K frontman Matt Thiessen and used to stage dive at their shows while they would cover Eminem's "Lose Yourself". Also, she totally provided backing vocals for established Christian rock sensations P.O.D.'s 2006 single "Goodbye For Now". This is not a drill.
Like most things on the Internet, Katy's P.O.D. involvement has been public knowledge for some time, but it's also one of those things that tends to slip through the tiny sieve-holes of our collective memory, and so the story has enjoyed a peak in interest over the last 24 hours since being reposted on Twitter. It's all for the best, though, because the video features Katy Perry wailing in a neckerchief while loads of moshers hold their hands up for her earnestly, the sight of which has an entertainment value expiry date of NEVER. Perry even performed the track with them and a string section live on Jay Leno.
If you've got this far, and you're still reading, and you're thinking "Okay, cool, but honestly, who the hell are P.O.D.?" then you will probably know them for their 2001 mainstream crossover hit "Alive" - the metal equivalent to R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly".
Watch the video for "Goodbye For Now" below and peep Perry being hella emotional in a single black fingerless glove around the 3:12 mark.
