Shunkan is the project of Los Angeles-born/New Zealand-based songwriter Marina Sakimoto. Her moniker means 'moment' or 'in a moment' in Japanese, and that's exactly what she's so good at doing with her songs - taking snapshots of fleeting thoughts and feelings, putting them on display, and inviting you to hold them.
We're premiering "Paelentologist", a bare bones cut from her debut album The Pink Noise out on November 20 via Art Is Hard. Having recently filled out her sound with a full band, Shunkan's new stuff has ditched the lo-fi fuzz that defined the first EP and smoothed out the edges in a way that allows the sense of intimacy to come through more clearly without losing any of the neccessary bruises. Without getting too Miranda July about it, "Paelentologist" is like a musical heart-to-heart to sit down with during the best and worst times.
Sakimoto says of the record “the inspiration was honesty and clarity, and the struggle of keeping your demons at bay. The lyrics are vulnerable and straight forward with hints of abstract imagery and setting.”
