water in a box safety sign This Beach Found a Clever Way to Promote Water Safety

To help promote water safety and increase awareness about the dangers of currents, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has installed a box filled with a tonne of water at Aberdeen Beach in Scotland. The box reads:

“Try Pushing this 1 tonne of water. Now imagine it’s pushing back, travelling faster than an Olympic swimmer. You can try and fight against it. But you’ll tire way before the water does. The strong, powerful currents around the Scottish coast are dangerously unpredictable . Don’t let the water catch you out.”

According to the BBC, the box was installed near where a six-year-old boy and his mother perished this past August after getting swept out to sea (story).

The 1-tonne water box not only gives a tangible frame of reference to beach goers, but also makes for a photo-op that will hopefully help spread the safety message through social media.
