In 1966, Lucas Samaras’ ground-breaking Room No. 2 (popularly known as Mirrored Room) was unveiled. It was one of the earliest installation artworks that encouraged viewers to enter and experience rather than passively view.

The original room can be found in the permanent collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. The mirror on wood installation measures 96 x 96 x 120 inches (243.8 x 243.8 x 304.8 cm). The immersive experience reminds me of Yayoi Kusama’s ‘infinity mirror room’ which we featured in 2013.

Lucas Samaras (b. 1936, Kastoria, Macedonia, Greece) has been the subject of more than one-hundred solo exhibitions and seven major career retrospectives. He is represented by The Pace Gallery where a new exhibition of his work featuring 720 photographs and a mirrored room installation is on view through August 14, 2015, at 510 West 25th Street in New York City.
